define your audience

How can you design a site if you don’t know who’s going to be looking at it?

  • Audience are the users and their objectives.
  • Audience definition beforehand helps in understanding how users will react to the site.
  • Audience is not defined by the technology they use.

who is who?
Define who is going to be visiting your site and why:
  1. Use the list from previous step.
  2. Add as many groups you can think of – categorize if the list becomes too long (i.e. Buyers, Sellers, Dealers and Other).
  3. Write down the most important needs and goals for each one.
  4. Have everyone rank the importance of each audience and each need and goal for each audience.

scenarios
Now comes the fun creative part. You tell a story of your users to help you visualize the site and its users.

The size of your project and number of audiences determines how many user scenarios you will write; usually three to six should be sufficient but be prepared for more if need be (…or you get into it).

Create a character for your user; give him a name, a background, and a task to accomplish on the site. Use a task from your list of needs and goals. Then write a story about how the character uses the site to complete the given task. Use your imagination, push the limits. This will help when defining content.

warning; this can be time consuming!
